Old Time Christmas
Pomander balls became a staple Christmas decoration in Williamsburg in the 1930's. The residents were told that they can decorate for the holiday, but not with blinking lights and plastic Santas. They had to use decorations that would have been available in the colonial days.
Pomaders had their place in Colonial Williamsburg, but most people then did not celebrate Christmas. They were used mostly by the rich folks as an air freshener. The poorer people would never use good fruit and spices as decorations, especially when it helped prevent scurvy!
The residents in 1930 Williamsburg brought this tradition to Christmas, and some people still make pomander balls today. The wonderful aroma of oranges and cloves has been given a spicy twist with peppercorn to create a wonderful, old-fashioned, Christmas scent.
